Photo of the Week 12 March 2013
Congratulations to this week’s winner Darwin Seegmiller from San Francisco, California for his image “Stairs and Stripes.”
Photographer: Darwin Seegmiller
Title: “Stairs and Stripes”
Hometown: San Francisco, California
Gear Used: Nikon D700, 24-70mm f/2.8, and SB-900
We love the use of light in Darwin’s photo “Stairs and Stripes” and that’s why we’ve selected it this week as our Photo of the Week. We were able to ask Darwin a few questions about his image, what inspires him as a photographer and what kind of gear he uses in his photography. Check out his responses below:
Do you have a title for this image? Who is the individual and where was the image taken?
The title is “Stairs and Stripes.” It’s actually a self-portrait of me taken underneath the stairway at my home.
What inspired the shot:
The area under my stairs is my daughters play area. One day we had a blackout while I was at the bottom of the stairs and I asked my son to bring me a flashlight so I could see. As he was coming down the stairs, I noticed how the light from the flashlight was shooting through the stairs. That’s how I got the idea. The worst about the shot was moving the two dollhouses, play kitchen and tons of Barbies out of the area to get it, and then putting it all back when I was done.
Is this natural light in your photograph or did you use any lighting tools to achieve the desired striped effect?
I used a Nikon SB-900, camera right, to shoot light through the stairs.
What kind of camera and gear did you use for this photo? What other gear do you enjoy shooting with and working with?
The photograph was shot on timer using a Nikon D700, 24-70mm f/2.8, and an SB-900. I’m primarily a Nikon guy who enjoys shooting with both natural light and strobes.
What kind of photography do you enjoy doing the most? Who are some of your favorite photographers and artists you draw inspiration from?
I shoot everything…Weddings, studio, dance, life events, you name it. If I had to say what I enjoy the most, I would probably say performance art photography. Capturing the energy, passion, and drama is exciting to me. I tend to enjoy looking at the work of photographers such as Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, and Annie Leibovitz. I’d love to sit down with them and ask what inspires them, where their ideas come from, etc.
