Photo of the Week 23 April 2013
Congratulations to this week’s Photo of the Week Winner Jorge Novoa from San Francisco, CA. We love how time seems to stand still in this urban portrait Jorge captured and were lucky enough to ask him a few questions about his image, what inspired the shot, and what inspires his photography. Be sure to check out his answers below:
• What is your hometown?
I was born in Granada Hills, CA and raised in Las Vegas, NV. I currently live in San Francisco, CA.
• What’s the story behind this image?
I was in NYC traveling through the city with some friends via subway. I saw the image unfold before me and I instantly recognized the opportunity to snap a unique image.
• Any insight into the individuals in the image?
The man on the far left took shelter in the station, the last place one would think of as a place to rest. The man on the far right casually read unfazed by the scenario unfolding around him. The individuals in the center were friends of mine that took advantage of the open seats for a quick respite before catching the next train. As a visitor to NYC, the subway scene struck me as unique, but I understand that the everyday life in an urban environment makes scenarios like this regular occurrences.
• This image seems to be an urban portrait of sorts. Was there any particular message you were trying to convey with this shot? Were there any difficulties in achieving the shot at a busy metro station?
I was trying to show the range of individuals that share an urban space. Some see the metro stop as a transportation hub others see it as shelter.
It was difficult to shoot in low light. Fortunately, there were a row of lights above the people in the image but I also had to shoot wide open and with a slow shutter to capture the detail.
• What type of camera, gear, and equipment did you use to capture the shot? Is there any tool in your gear bag you can’t work without?
• What kind of photography do you enjoy shooting most both for professional and personal photography projects?
Portrait work is my absolute favorite for Pro & Personal Photography.
• Who are some of your favorite photographers and artists that you draw inspiration from?
I’m inspired by the countless artists that post their work on ffffound.com. It’s a highly addictive image bookmarking site with a range of amazing artists. I draw from it for inspiration when I’m stuck on an idea or need to think way outside of what ever creative zone I’m in.
You can find more of Jorge’s work on his San Francisco based creative studio Werehaus’ website (www.thewarehaus.com), on his personal portfolio website (http://jorgenovoa.com/), on his Flickr, on his Instagram, or on his twitter.
