Photo of the Week 9 July 2013
Congratulations to Lilian Holt from Hidden Hills, California for her Photo of the Week winning image, “A Tree with 12 Lions.” Lilian was in the right place, at the right time, and had the right gear to capture this once-in-a-lifetime breathtaking shot on her recent trip to Tanzania, Africa. We had the chance to speak with Lilian about what it was like to stumble upon a tree filled with lions in the wild, what gear she enjoys using for wildlife photography, and what other photographers inspire her. Be sure to see her answers below, and to see more of Lilian’s work you can visit her Facebook page.
What type of camera, gear, and equipment did you use to capture the shot?
A couple of days before I left I bought a Tamron 300F-CA 2X which I used to get some wonderful individual lion shots, a leopard draped on a branch, fabulous flying vultures, hippos swimming, and, as you can imagine, so many other amazing pictures.
Where was the image taken? How did you achieve this shot?
The photo was taken in Tanzania, Africa when I was there in the middle of May, 2013. We were driving slowly and our guide received a radio call and told us to hang on. We were driving basically off road and it got really bumpy. We came upon a single tree in the middle of acres and acres of dried grass. The driver stopped and I could see movement but didn’t know what it was. As we got closer to the tree, it took a moment to realize there were so many lions in the tree. OMG !
It was an amazing sight. We were in a van with a roof that lifts up. Since I’m 5’3″, I quickly pulled off my boots and stood on the seats so I could rest my elbows on the roof and have stability for the shots I captured. I was so focused on getting the shots before they moved that I’m not sure I fully appreciated what I was seeing at that moment.
What kind of photography do you enjoy shooting most both for professional and personal photography projects?
I love photographing animals with their unpredictability, and especially exotic animals in their home environment. As a pilot and a member of the San Fernando Valley 99s International Organization of Women Pilots, I’m so fortunate to be part of another passion to photograph and record our activities from the ground and the air. Living in an equestrian community and photographing horse shows is another passion of mine. I really love doing Informal photography and sharing my pictures with everyone.
Who are some of your favorite photographers that you draw inspiration from?
I have always been inspired by Annie Liebowitz, Ansel Adams and Bill Dow (not as well know as the others but an amazing exotic animal photographer).
