Photo of the Week 13 August 2013
Congratulations to Juan Guevara for his stunning starscape image “Psalms 19:1″ of the Mobius Arch captured in the Alabama Hills. We had the chance to speak with Juan about this particular image and find the meaning behind his title, what gear he used to capture this shot, and what other photography he enjoys.
What type of camera, gear, and equipment did you use to capture the shot? Do you have a title for the image?
I shoot a Nikon D300s with Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8, Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 and Sigma 50mm f/1.4. “Psalms 19:1″ was a 15 second exposure at f/2.8, 17mm at ISO3200 captured with my Nikkor 17-55mm on a MeFoto Globe Trotter Travel tripod.
Where was the image taken? What is the significance of the title of this image?
The image was captured at the Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine, CA at the foothills of Mt Whitney at 9pm. The arch is the Mobius Arch. I chose this title because of what Psalms 19:1 says: “The heavens declare the glory of God: the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”
How long did you spend in post-production editing the image? Why did you choose that specific gear for this shot?
Post production was done on a MacBook Pro in Lightroom 4. I did some contrast and clarity adjustments and also boosted the vibrancy and saturation. I choose the gear because I needed to be able to capture as much light as I could and the use of a tripod was required.
What kind of photography do you enjoy shooting most both for professional and personal photography projects?
I enjoy shooting fine art, still life and product photography and, of course, landscape photography. My wife and I do some traveling and so I would like to do travel photography more. In the future, I would also like to get more into portrait photography.
Who are some of your favorite photographers that you draw inspiration from?
My favorite photographers are Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, and Diane Arbus. I really draw a lot of inspiration from the student photographers and teachers of photography at Cypress College. There is a lot of amazing talent there.
