Jordan Frey Wins Calumet & Canon Student Photo Contest
We are pleased to announce the winners of our recent photo contest here in Chicago as part of our launch of the new Canon EOS 70D camera. Our call for entries was sent out to Chicagoland photography students and we were overwhelmed by the many wonderful submissions we received. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to participate and share their work.
The first prize was a Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera kit, second place prize was a Canon Pixma Pro 100 Printer and Canon PowerShot cameras were awarded to 3rd, 4th, and 5th place winners. We will be featuring the winning shots and an interview with each of the winners here on the blog.
Our first featured image and interview is with first place winner Jordan Frey, a current photography student at Columbia College in Chicago. We had the chance to catch up with Jordan about her winning image and find out how she plans on using her newly won 70D!
What is your hometown? Where and what are you currently studying?
I am from Decatur, IL and am currently studying Photography at Columbia College Chicago.
What type of camera gear and equipment did you use to capture the shot? Do you have a title for the image?
I used a Canon Rebel T3i with the 18-55mm lens with no flash to capture this shot. The name of the image is “Lifeless News in a Cold City.”
Where was the image taken? How did you plan for the shot?
This image was taken on the sidewalk of 600 S. Michigan Avenue. I had just gotten out of class and began to walk home in the cold weather when I saw this Columbia Chronicle school newspaper lying lifeless in the snow. I thought it was a beautiful scene with the city in the background so I got down on the ground level with the paper and took the shot.
What is the message you are trying to convey with this image?
This image is a moment of expression for myself. I wanted to show the world something that is so common yet powerful.
Who are some photographers that inspire you?
I am greatly inspired by Annie Leibovitz, Adam Franzino, and Jennifer Avello.
What type of photography do you enjoy most for personal and professional projects?
I personally enjoy fashion and commercial photography the most. I also enjoy taking scenery pictures similar to the one I submitted but my dream is to photograph fashion.
How will adding this Canon 70D with 18-55mm lens help you in future photography projects?
This addition to my collection is unbelievably helpful in so many ways. I will be able to take stronger photographs and participate in more advanced projects. This Canon equipment has given me the opportunity to take my photography to the next level much sooner than I ever expected and I couldn’t be more grateful.
What’s the best tip or advice you’d offer aspiring photographers?
My best advice is to pursue your dreams and work as hard as you can at all times to get where you want to go. Success takes a lot of hard work and it is all worth it in the end. Always remember that your life will be filled with happiness as long as you pursue your dreams. As a photographer I will never just have a job, I have a lifelong passion!
