Sarah’s Review of Calumet’s New Premium Photography Books
Content Contributed by: Sarah Derer
I am a photographer. I, like many other people who do what I do, am always looking for newer and sexier ways to showcase my images. I have learned that you can blow $1,000 very quickly on a nice coffee table book with your name all over it. Is it worth it? I don’t know. I’ve never known the pleasure of being able to spend that kind of cash on a collection of my own photography.
So, when Calumet introduced their new premium book service, available through www.calumetprints.com, my interest was piqued. First of all, these hardcover books are priced right starting around $70.00 for the 20-page version. If you’re inclined to spend a bit more, $200 will get you a whole bunch more pages. As a photographer who’s just starting out, shooting in my dining room/studio, the $70 is equally doable and justifiable. The quality of these books is high enough that it inspires confidence in any potential client.
Of course, the experience of the book starts with the experience of ordering it. I gave it a shot by designing a book of images from a project I shot for Imprint Projects and Levi’s this summer. The process was not as intuitive as I would’ve liked, but once I had screwed up my order just a couple of times, everything started to make sense. It was also clear, as I began to fill my allotted pages, that this product is truly ideal for someone who has a lot of images to fit into one book, on a budget. If you’ve got a million snapshots from your kid’s graduation or the latest family reunion, this book will serve you well.
The sample book that I was able to flip through at my store before placing my order is really quite nice. It has a black hardcover in a matte/satin finish. What I like most about it is the lay flat page design. A single image can fill two pages for nice impact and I don’t end up losing any significant part of my photograph to a nasty crease down the center.
All in all, there’s a lot to recommend in the new premium photo books Calumet is offering. The solid design, decent price and customizable options make it ideal for a new photographer looking for a professional portfolio but it’s also a perfect home for those myriad wedding photos that everyone in the family wants copies of. I’ve placed my order and eagerly await its arrival.
